Ms. Ribhiyyeh Tawfiq Abu A'oun, 43 years old, from the village of Jaba' near Jenin

In 1991, during one of the Israeli aircraft raids and the dumping of tear gas shells on the village of Jaba' in Jenin District, Ribhiyyeh Abu A'oun became disabled and had to undergo physiotherapy and occupational therapy at Abu Rayya Center in Beitunia.

At the center, one of the East Jerusalem YMCA - Rehabilitation Program counselors visited her to introduce her to the work and services of the Program. The counselor visited her on a weekly basis to offer counseling services that enabled her to release the negative feelings she had, talk about her disability, accept her reality and focus on her ability to change her life.

The Program also made adaptations to her kitchen and bathroom making them accessible for her disability. Despite the good progress she made on the psychosocial level, Ribhiyyeh was traumatized again during the following year of 1992 by the death of her one and a half-year-old child. The counselor kept on visiting her refusing to let her surrender to her grief.

In 1994, the Program supported her in receiving training in sewing at Silat Al Thohr for three months, the fact which enabled her to get out of her house and meet with different people. Her social involvement through training and work made people trust her and nominate her as a member at the municipal council of Jaba'.

This success was followed by her determination to establish her own project to better support her family, and thus she received a loan from the Ministry of Social Affairs to open a shop for selling kids' wear and house accessories.

The East Jerusalem YMCA - Rehabilitation Program played a significant role in improving Ribhiyyeh's life. It helped her overcome her disability and successfully re-integrate into the community through its comprehensive psychosocial rehabilitation services.
