Advocacy campaign and festival to raise awareness on children's rights‏

As part of the Psychosocial Emergency Teams Project implemented by the East Jerusalem YMCA - Rehabilitation Program, an advocacy campaign and festival were implemented in corporation with the Islamic Orphans' School, to advocate for and raise awareness on the rights of Palestinian children as part of the Palestinian Child Day celebrations.

The campaign started with a parade led by Abu Dis Youth Club Scout from the Islamic Orphans' School in Abu Dis towards the housing circle. More than 200 children participated in this parade holding banners demanding for their rights, especially their right to play, to move freely, to education and to live safely. The Palestinian policemen accompanied the parade to ensure the safety of the children.

Following that, the children moved to the Islamic Orphans' School to enjoy the entertaining performance provided by Fantazia, a group of clowns for around two hours. The performance included dance, comedy shows, a magic show, in addition to a puppets' show.

More than 600 children from the Islamic Orphans' School, Al-Awda school, and Jeel Al-Amal School participated in the theatrical performances which aimed at raising awareness on children rights especially the rights of the marginalized groups who live in conflicted areas.

Ms. Ibtisam Adileh -the EJ-YMCA Rehabilitation Program Psychosocial Supervisor in East Jerusalem-, Mr. Murad Suboh -Director of the Islamic Orphans' School-, and Ms. Taghreed Ghneim -counselor at EJ-YMCA Rehabilitation Program- further agreed on the children's need to attend psychosocial services and enjoy such fun activities. Ms. Lina Al Shamali, Director of Al-Awda School, reported on how the children reacted happily to such an initiative and how desperately children need such activities. Ms. Aseel Abu Ghazaleh and Ms. Kholoud Shweiki, two volunteers at the Psychosocial Emergency Teams Project, explained that children living in such conflicted areas do not enjoy a happy life, they need to be more aware of their rights, and they deserve to smile.

The campaign and festival were implemented as part of the Psychosocial Emergency Teams Project implemented by the East Jerusalem YMCA - Rehabilitation Program in Hebron and East Jerusalem in partnership with UNICEF with the aim of providing psychosocial support to children and caregivers who suffer from social and political violence.
